How much does it cost to build an AI chatbot in India?
What drives the cost of building an AI chatbot in India — scope, knowledge, channels, languages and running costs — and how to get an accurate quote.
“How much does a chatbot cost?” is the first question almost every client asks us, and the honest answer is: it depends on a handful of specific things. The good news is that those things are knowable before you start. This guide walks through each one so you can estimate your own project — and spot a quote that doesn’t add up.
Two costs, not one
Every AI chatbot has two separate costs, and it’s worth keeping them apart:
- The build — a one-time cost to design, build, test and launch the assistant.
- The running cost — a monthly cost for the AI model usage, hosting, and any messaging channels such as WhatsApp.
A cheap build with an expensive running cost can end up costing more over a year than a careful build that keeps usage efficient. Ask for both numbers.
What drives the build cost
1. How much the bot needs to know
This is the biggest factor. An assistant that answers from a single 10-page FAQ is a very different job from one that needs to understand hundreds of documents, a product catalogue and live data from your database.
The work here is preparing that knowledge: collecting documents, cleaning them up, splitting them into pieces a model can search, and building retrieval (often called RAG — retrieval-augmented generation) so the bot looks up the right facts before answering. Messy, scattered or outdated content takes longer to prepare.
2. What the bot needs to do
Answering questions is one level. Taking actions is another:
- Answer only — explain policies, timings, prices, processes.
- Look things up — check an order status, a result or an appointment slot in your system.
- Take actions — book an appointment, create a ticket, capture a lead in your CRM.
Each integration with another system adds work, because it has to be built, secured and tested.
3. Where it runs
A chat widget on your website is the simplest channel. WhatsApp is often where Indian customers actually are, but it runs through the WhatsApp Business Platform, which adds setup, message templates and per-conversation charges. An in-app assistant needs work inside your app. The same knowledge base can serve all three, but each channel adds build time.
4. Languages
Modern models handle Hindi and many other Indian languages well, but “handles well” still has to be tested. Supporting more languages means more test questions, more review and sometimes adjustments to how content is prepared. Voice adds another layer again.
5. How accurate it has to be
A bot that suggests blog posts can afford to be approximate. A bot that tells parents an admission deadline cannot. Higher stakes mean more work on evaluation — sets of real questions with checked answers that every change is tested against — plus guardrails and a clear hand-off to a human.
6. The admin side
Do you need to review conversations, update the knowledge base yourself, or see analytics on what people ask? An admin view is extra work, but it’s usually what keeps a chatbot useful six months after launch.
What drives the running cost
- Model usage. You pay the AI provider per amount of text processed. Longer documents pulled into each answer, longer conversations and bigger models all increase cost. Good engineering — routing simple questions to smaller models, caching repeated answers and trimming what’s sent to the model — can reduce this significantly.
- Hosting and database. Usually modest for most businesses.
- Channel charges. WhatsApp conversations are billed by Meta per conversation, separately from the model cost.
- Maintenance. Content changes, model updates and improvements based on real conversations.
A simple way to estimate your project
Before you talk to any studio, write down:
- The 20 questions your team answers most often.
- Where the answers live today (documents, website, a system, people’s heads).
- Which channels your customers use.
- Which languages they write in.
- What the bot must never get wrong.
- Roughly how many conversations you expect per month.
That one page makes any quote faster and more accurate — and lets you compare quotes on the same basis.
TODO: add Devreon’s typical price bands for a website-only FAQ bot, a multi-channel assistant and an assistant with integrations, once the founders confirm them.
Red flags in a chatbot quote
- No mention of your content. If nobody asks about your documents, the bot will answer from general knowledge — and get your specifics wrong.
- No testing plan. Ask how accuracy will be measured before launch.
- No running-cost estimate. You’ll find out on the first invoice.
- You don’t own it. Make sure the code, the prompts and your data are yours.
How we price chatbots
We start every project with a free scoping call. From that, we send a written plan and a fixed-price quote for the build, plus an estimate of monthly running costs. You own the code and data from day one.
